We meet 10 years ago. At the time, I was living in Tampa, Fl and was having a really difficult time managing my diabetes. I had lows/highs all the time and I was seeking advice from another diabetic about how to properly manage my disease. So, I posted on diabetes.org. At the time, they had a support page and people could post all kinds of questions and seek advice.
Anyway, so I posted diabetic looking for friends in Tampa. Two days later, Dave responded. We then meet at the mall in Tampa for coffee (although I don’t drink coffee). When we initially met, we talked about our diagnosis, the challenges of living with the disease and what our personal story is.
I was diagnosed in 1987, Dave was diagnosed in 1999.
Our initial meeting was awesome. After we had met at the mall, we then went to another location and had chicken wings. The place was located right next to my house and I thought they were the best wings in Tampa. I of course ordered mine as hot as possible. Dave said after I ordered, I had him hooked.
A few days later, he came to my house for dinner. Remember being on N, yup, that was the long lasting insulin he was on, and he immediately went low. I told him to get off that insulin immediately as the peaks and valleys it had was really impossible to predict. At the time, I was on Lantus and Humalog. That was the first sharing of the disease that we really shared. It showed how important it really is to have a mentor to discuss this disease. You see I think most doctor’s do not really understand this disease, how important their role really is. Yet, how important it is to manage this disease yourself.
